Antique Japanese Zushi shrine with twin Buddhas on either side of a devotional plaque, carved and gilded, on lotus thrones atop an oval lotus base. Gilded interior and black lacquer finish. Although the theme of the twin Buddhas is more common to Burma, images of twin Buddhas have been recorded in Japan as early as the Asuka period in the latter half of the 7th Century. The image may be understood as a prompt to remember that the twin aspects of enlightenment--the perfect Mind of Bliss of Amida Buddha, and the worldly truth of the Buddha Dharma--are really one and the same. A Momoyama~Edo Period Wooden Image of Amida Nyorai with its original zushi encasement shrine. Patron Diety/Saint of People born in the year of Dog, Boar/Pig. It is believed that those who believe and worship him will be blessed with rebirth in paradise after life and with eternal peacefulness in heart. Amida is one of the loftiest savior figures in Japanese Buddhism, and Amida faith is concerned primarily with the life to come, the life in the beyond. Amida is also one of the Five Tathagata of Wisdom. The world-famous Big Buddha (Daibutsu) statue in Kamakura, around 15 meters in height, is Amida. To followers of Japan's Pure Land sects, Amida has eclipsed the Historical Buddha as the most popular divinity in Japan's Mahayana traditions.
